Bucharest to become the Capital of cultural heritage very soon!
Preparations for the upcoming European Cultural Heritage Summit to be held in Bucharest, this October, together with the much anticipated EuropaNostra!
I met with Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Secretary General at Europa Nostra, Raluca Munteanu, Project Director at Pro Patrimonio Foundation and Irina Iamandescu, Deputy director for the National Heritage Institute to discuss the final preparatory steps.
Romania is no stranger when it comes to projects that have been awarded with the European Heritage Awards, Europe’s highest honour when it comes to heritage. Some recent examples:
🏆 Saxon Church in Alma Vii – a project that rescued and restored a cultural landmark that symbolises centuries of history and craftsmanship.
🏆 St. Michael’s Church in Cluj-Napoca – a project that embarked on an extensive restoration journey from 2016 to 2022.
🏆 The Pathfinders of the Waters – a project that utilises an intangible heritage element specific to the Danube Delta – the traditional canoe known as the lotca.
🏆 The Via Transilvanica – Romania’s own “El Camino”, a hiking trail that spans more than 1,400 kilometres, 20 different ethnic and cultural regions of Romania, and around 400 communities.
🏆 The Wooden Church of Urși Village – that has been carefully restored with the close involvement of many partners including the local community.
🏆 The Ambulance for Monuments – a project launched in 2016 to rescue hundreds of heritage-listed buildings in Romania through a large network of active heritage organisations.
