Trafficking in human beings is a violation of human rights and an offence to the dignity and integrity of the human being!

numbers…

– every year, around 7 000 victims of trafficking are registered in the EU. Of course, the actual number of victims is likely to be much higher, as many victims remain undetected.
– over half (53%) of the victims are EU citizens.
– Romania ranks first in the EU in terms of citizenship of victims; female victims of sexual exploitation; child victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Together with our colleagues from the Spanish Embassy in Romania, as the current Presidency of the EU Council, we organized the Conference “Joining efforts to combat the trafficking in human beings: best practices in comprehensive transnational cooperation”.

Joined by:
–  the President of the Romanian Senate, Mr Nicolae Ciucă,
– HE Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Romania, Mr Jose Antonio Hernandez Perez-Solorzano,
–  the Minister of Justice, Ms Alina Gorghiu,
–  the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mr Cătălin Necula
– the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Janina Sitaru
– as well as experts from the Romanian police and the Spanish national Police and Guardia Civil, the DIICOT, the ANITP, senators and deputies, together with experts of civil society organizations and public institutions.

Important to see the strong commitment of the Romanian authorities for the fight against the trafficking in human beings. The EU stands firmly against trafficking in human beings!

Our Anti-trafficking Directive already proved to be a key development in enhancing EU efforts to prevent and combat trafficking in human beings. For this reason, the Commission will continue to support Member States in further implementing it.
